Hambo In The Barn is the recording that started the label Azalea City Recordings. Bassist,
pianist and accordionist Charlie Pilzer joins with fiddlers Andrea Hoag and
Loretta Kelley to create a sparkling and varied recording of Swedish couple
dance music. The CD contains sixteen hambos (a dance in 3/4 time), two waltzes,
a snoa and two schottisches. With the assistance of Frank Brown on guitar
and Larry Robinson on mandola (bouzouki), Hambo In The Barn includes fast and slow, major and minor, solo and ensemble pieces suitable for dancing, tune learning or just listening.

Track 20 5:08
Dur och moll / Skinnbracka med lucku / Horga Dur traditional
The hambo is a
Swedish couple dance in 3/4 rhythm. We play a medley of three traditional
tunes. The first two, Dur och moll (major and minor) and Skinnbracka med
lucku are from the village of Boda in Dalarna, a region of Sweden rich in
fiddle tunes. One of the best known hambos is Horgalåten. The
legend of this tune involves a pact with the devil and a fiddler who couldn't
stop playing until the dancers had literally danced their feet off. We end
the medley with Horga dur, a major key variant, which may be related to Norwegian
pols tunes as well as to the common Swedish Horgalåten
Musicians:
Andrea Hoag: fiddle
Loretta Kelley: fiddle
Charlie Pilzer: bass, 2-row accordion
Larry Robinson: bouzouki
Frank Brown: guitar
