Mary Sue Twohy
Mary Sue Twohy
Mary Sue Twohy’s smooth vocals dancing above subtle, expressive guitar garnered her nominations in 2000 and 2001 for Contemporary Female Folk vocalist, Contemporary Folk Recording, and Song of the Year and 1999 Best New Artist Award from the Washington Area Music Association. Azalea City Recordings, Carroll Street presents The Risk Involved, Mary Sue’s second recording effort, produced by Pete and Maura Kennedy. Training Butterflies, Mary Sue’s debut, was produced by Pete Kennedy. Both CDs have gone to second pressing.

"To quote Yoda, 'Do or do not...there is no try.' There’s no trying about
The Risk Involved; Twohy just gets out there and does it, and she does it well."
 Dirty Linen 2002

"Mary Sue Twohy is a  gentle, but compelling singer..."
Sing Out! Folk Song Magazine 2002

"If anything Twohy’s soprano has only grown more appealing and expressive in the interim, and the choice of tunes this time around consistently serves her
well."
Mike Joyce, The Washington Post, 2001

"As far as the Goose-Bump meter goes, Mary Sue Twohy is up there with Nanci Griffith, Sarah McLachlan, Iris Dement."
Dave Richards, The Morning News, 200

THE RISK INVOLVED

I don’t know when I’ve ever felt this way before
I don’t know if I‘ll ever feel this way again
you are a December rose, blooming even when its cold
spreading petals so wide and bold and you know the risk involved

Please stay, right here, right now, in my heart
please stay, right here, right now, in my dreams
please stay, right here, right now in my arms

I don’t know when I‘ve ever felt this way before
I don’t know if I’ll ever feel this way again
you are an April snow
falling even when it’s spring time
melting as quick as you fall
and you know the risk involved

I don’t know when I’ve ever felt this way before
I don’t know if I’ll ever feel this way again
you are a desert rain
washing my heart so clean
and I’ll never, ever be the same
and you know the risk in involved

GIFT OF THE MAGI
Della saved her pennies carefully all year
for her a Jim a gift to match the highest star
but expenses were much more than she’d expected
these days, they always are
and the next day would be Christmas

It was a rare and fine and sterling watch chain she saw
t’would go with the gold watch his father gave
as her hair fell past her knees, a waterfall round her
she knew , she must be brave
for the next day would be Christmas

And the gifts of Christmas run deeper than this
it’s in the lay of the land, in a sweet lovers kiss
and its not what you give, it’s not what you take
it’s knowing they even exist

So on went her old jacket , her old brown hat
a twirl of skirts and still a sparkle in her eye
as she fluttered down the street to where the sign said
hair good of all kinds
because the next day would be Christmas

Jim saw the sterling watch chain from the doorway
he held the jeweled combs to please his Della fair
but he’d sold the watch to buy the perfect match for her beautiful
vanished hairand the next day would be Christmas

And everywhere , they are the wisest
traveled far, the lengths of their hearts
those who sacrifice the greatest treasures of their home
