Exciting and innovative, The Alexandria Kleztet has been combining traditional Eastern European/Jewish music with diverse influences for more than a decade. New arrangements of traditional melodies and original songs by members of the band draw upon jazz, classical, world beat, rock and other musical forms to create a unique and entertaining sound.
The band is based in the Washington/Baltimore area and has performed throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, including annual appearances at the Kennedy Center and regular concerts at the Peabody Institute. They began touring internationally in 2007 with an appearance at the Semanas Musicales festival in Chile.
Led by woodwind player Seth Kibel, the band includes violinist Helen Hausmann, bass player Scott Harlan and percussionist Tim Jarvis. The Kleztet has won 13 Washington Area Music Association Awards (Wammies) including "World Music Duo or Group," "World Music Instrumentalist," "Jazz Instrumentalist," and "World Music Recording."
Peace, Love and Coffee contains 14 brand-new recordings, including six original compositions, as well as creative re-workings of classic Jewish songs like Bei Mir Bist Du Schein and Ketsad M'rakdin. It also contains numerous audience favorites, including Bad Coffee (Builds Character),Youkali (a tango by Kurt Weill), and their legendary interpretation of Cantina Band(from the very first Star Wars film)
In addition to the core group, the album includes guest appearances by prominent area musicians Sean Lane, Maggie Sansone, Ira Gitlin, and fellow Azalean Jon Carroll.
