    Laura Baron
Laura Baron
Singer Songwriter Laura Baron was nominated for a 2005 Wammie Award for Best Contemporary Female Folk Vocalist. She is the winner of several songwriting awards including a 2004 Mid-Atlantic Song Contest Gold Award for her song, Peace Someday.

Laura released her CD, Stay With Me, with Azalea City Recordings in May 2006. Stay With Me was chosen as a washingtonpost.com/mp3 Top Pick and is often featured on Mary Cliff's WETA Traditions broadcast.

Laura’s musical career began co-producing and recording children's music in the 80's and 90's with Patti Dallas. Their company Golden Glow Recordings (www.goldenglowrecordings.com ) has sold thousands of their recordings across the nation and won awards and acclaim. Laura & Patti won the Parents Choice Gold Award for their Good Morning Sunshine recording. Laura’s first original songs were written for young children.

Laura’s voice is capable of a wide range of musical colors and emotions. She combines folk, blues and jazz to create her unique sound. Laura’s experience singing jazz with a big band has influenced her contemporary folk sound. Her music is connected to the rhythms and seasons of the earth. She moves easily from stirring songs of peace and matters of the heart to humorous and provocative blues and soulful jazz. The songs recorded on Stay With Me showcase a melding of styles.  Black Madonna moves and sways with the primal forces of feminine energy while Seabird is a light celebration of water, wind and the airy sounds of the bossa nova.

Seabird and Black Madonna were both finalists in Mid-Atlantic Song Contests.

“Laura’s songs soar with rhythm, beauty, and intelligence.  The lyrics stand as poems alone and her voice seduces. . . Pick any one of her songs and discover a voice you need to hear.”
Terry Kester, WPFW

“Open your ears and listen to the heart of this ‘Musical Baroness’ as she transports you with her award winning songs'. “
Phil Young, Folk On The Fringe 3MDR
Melbourne, Australia

“Laura is one of the finest performing songwriters out there today.  Her songs have the depth and breadth needed to keep you listening, and her incredible voice just pulls you in.  She is truly a gem!”
Jean Bayou, President, Songwriters Association of Washington

“...Arrangements are meaningful too -- the mellow mediation Peace Someday is carried lightly by strings, while Black Madonna is haunted by layered harmony vocals . . . a CD of admirable heart.”
Takoma Voice

“Wonderful songs, great players, superb production...a tremendous singing voice.”
                  Don Bridges, Past President,
                  Songwriters Association of Washington

Black Madonna

I used to live here down in these canyons
Underneath the ragged rock
I used to paint the walls with song then
It's been so long that people have forgot

My wings were lavender and twilight
Lifting me high above these hills
I painted stars into the blue night
And filled the lovers’ hearts with chills

My names were numbered as the sky birds
My voice spoke leaves upon the trees
My hands formed grasses for the wild herds
When God was still a woman like me
When God was still a woman . . .

But, that was then and this is now
They gave the king his crown
They through me out; they drained the well
And sent me straight to hell . . .

I am the Black Madonna
Older than these canyon stones
I undulate in pure desire
Asleep within your bones

Go on paint me in your image
The virgin chaste and pure
I'll slip into your night dreams
Like Snake I'll bring the cure

I'll pry your soul wide open
And I’ll whisper in your ear
Remember when you wore the hooves
That you have grown to fear?

Remember when you roamed the sea
And nested in the willow?
Remember when you loved this earth
Her sweet breast your first pillow?
I am the Black Madonna
Older than these silly lies
I'll wake you from your techno-craze
That you have come to idolize

We'll dig beneath the trenches
Of these cities you have taken
I swear we will not rest
Until your soul has reawakened

I used to live here down in these canyons
Underneath the ragged rock
I used to paint the walls with song then
It's been so long that people have forgot

Seabird
Down here where the waters rise
The light of daybreak fills my weary eyes
My feet tread heavy across the land
The waves come crashing to the sand
Just like the love that slipped out from my hands

Chorus:
Seabird, take me to the sky
Oh how I long to hear your freedom cry
And we are dancing, rising with the tide
As all the joy locked deep inside begins to sing
Seabird my heart rides on your wing

My eyes greet the morning sky
As beautiful dancers glide so gently by
My heart’s a shell cast out to sea
A swirling tide won’t set me free
I need your wings to carry me . . .

Sometimes I feel like we’re dancing
Flying high above to a world I’ve only dreamed of . . .

Chorus
