What is Azalea City Recordings?

ACR is a label that lets artists maintain the rights to their own work, reserve creative control, and doesn’t expect all the profits to go back to paying the label expensives. ACR began as a small town folk label holding occasional potluck meetings and sponsoring local concerts. In 2005 we were delighted to receive a WAmmie for Best DC area record label.

ACR includes an eclectic array of roots-based musicians and songwriters who dip into the well of traditional music for their inspiration. Genres represented include Folk, Cajun, Blues, Roots Rock, and Americana. Whether they’re singer songwriters and/or in full band configurations, these musicians are an inspiration to each other and to their audiences.

Jon Carroll joins ACR, releases “Love Returns”

CD release concert: The Barns of Wolftrap, Vienna, VA. 7pm, $20, wolftrap.org

Love Returns CD cover

Love Returns is Jon Carroll’s first release on Azalea City Recordings. Many have enjoyed Jon’s energetic performances as keyboard-vocalist with Mary Chapin Carpenter. His long and diverse career has garnered him high acclaim in the D.C. area—he is a multiple Wammie winner as a vocalist, player, and songwriter. Jon has also gained national notoriety—as a multiple Grammy winner with Starland Vocal Band (“Afternoon Delight”), for his vocal arranging and as Best New Artist.

After recording five albums with SVB, he's gone on to work with myriad artists over the course of many years, and has had his songs recorded by luminaries such as Linda Ronstadt, Tom Jones, and Kenny Rogers. A sought-after session player, sideman, producer, and arranger, Jon has lent his studio efforts to Mary Chapin Carpenter, Rodney Crowell, Danny Gatton, and many, many others. joncarroll.org

“Jon Carroll is a one-man band, a poet, a songwriter, a singer of every kind of song, and above all, a musician’s musician. This wonderful record shows the remarkable confluence of his gifts, and I can also attest to his being a not-to-be-missed performer.” —Mary Chapin Carpenter

Dal Recipe from ACR artist: Karen Collins

ACR artist Karen Collins often makes this yummy dish at our monthly meetings. Enjoy!

Wash split peas and boil in the salted water until soft and most of the water is absorbed. Stir often. Heat the butter in a pan and add the ground spices. Stir them around for a few minutes. Remove from heat. Add the butter & spices to the dal. Return to the heat and let simmer until it looks like a fairly thick sauce. Remove the cloves & cinnamon stick before serving. Serve with rice and condiments.
