The U Liners
ACCD-0707
By just listening to "The U-Liners" you'll travel the rails of social justice and feel the community spirit as you witness traditions old and new from striking versions of songs of nostalgia, "Smoke, Smoke Smoke (that Cigarette)" to haunting laments as in Dave Alvin's "California Snow" to rock and rolling just for the fun of it "Down at the Half Moon Tonight" paying homage to a past musical haunt. You'll experience their harmony-fueled take on Woody Guthrie's "Pastures of Plenty" and infectious grooves on The Band's "Ophelia" and their own "Three Weeks to Vegas" - reflections of a vibe The U-Liners possess both on and off stage. Combining vast musical styles like Bluegrass, Rock, Folk and Country, The U-Liners are never a dull ride. The bands frontman, Joe Uehlein, is solid on guitar, and vocals; WAMMIE award winning multi-instrumentalist, Avril Smith, provides sparkling guitar, mandolin and vocals; Mindy McWilliams adds everything from haunting to lively fiddle and vocals; with the solid rhythm section of Barry Warsaw on bass and vocals and Larry Ferguson on drums and percussion.
The Washington DC area music scene has welcomed The U-Liners with enthusiasm and packed houses at Jammin' Java, Iota, The Birchmere (with Pete Seeger) and endless music festivals. NYC's Mercury Lounge and the Knitting Factory, Bally's of Las Vegas, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - Cleveland - have all hosted The U-Liners. Their eponymous debut CD, The U-Liners, marks the beginning of a new trip, crossing bridges and boundaries, providing audiences with inspiration, camaraderie and solid entertainment. As The Washington Post says, "The payoffs are plentiful..."
"The payoffs are plentiful....the original tunes enliven things...
real treats...when it puts a hauntingly harmonized spin on (Woody
Guthrie's) 'Pastures of Plenty'." - The Washington Post
"Longtime area roots-rocker Joe Uehlein practices in the best folk
tradition: social consciousness that never loses site of musical
enjoyment, and vice versa." - On Tap Magazine
